Where is Amherst?

Amherst, Ohio is a small city located in Lorain County; a city in northeastern Ohio. Amherst has a population of a little over 12,000 and is dubbed the “Sandstone Center of the World”. You can see many large pieces of sandstone in the yard of many homes and in front of the local library. Just thirty minutes away from Cleveland, the nearest big city you can find even more fun for the entire family. In 2014, the American sports comedy-drama “The Bronze” was filmed in Amherst Ohio. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2015 and released in March of 2016. The movie features many places such as Hastee Tastee, The Quarry Cafe, Park Lanes Bar & Grille, The Captain’s Club and the Cleveland Street cemetery.

City life with a small-town feel – Amherst is probably one of the littlest “big” cities in the area. Unlike the surrounding cities, it boasts a smaller population but has a lot of amenities of “city life”. Local shops, restaurants, and major retailers are located within or just a few minutes from here.

A supportive community – Amherst is probably one of the only cities I know that are super supportive of small businesses and community development. Everyone is always willing to help others, even if it means going out of their way to do so. This willingness to help grows as the holiday and cold weather approaches.

Excellent real estate market – Homes in Amherst highly desired because of the small city vibe, growing population, and an excellent school district.

Excellent rated school district – Amherst ranks in the top three of best school districts in Lorain County. Amherst Junior High School was recognized as the 2015 National Blue Ribbon School. Amherst Exempted Village Schools rank high on state tests and with a college credit partnership with Lorain County College high school students can earn college credits while in high school. Steele High School ranks number one in Lorain County for the most awarded college credits through LCCC.

Literally in the middle of everywhere – Amherst is conveniently located less than 45 minutes from major cities such as Cleveland and Sandusky. With local turnpike and highway access means you can get to major cities quicker and easier.

Best places to visit in Amherst

While it’s still fresh in your mind, I am sure you’re wondering what does this great city has to offer? Amherst offers many small businesses located in the heart of the city; the downtown district where you can find lots of different shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

Amherst offers many different bakeries within the city but two bakeries stand out from the rest. Kiedrowski’s Bakery is a Polish-American bakery that’s known for its famous Snoogle and Paczki. They offer a full line of Polish-American style baked goods such as donuts, pastries, cookies, and bread. They also make one of the best tasting cakes and cupcakes for all types of occasions. Kiedrowski was awarded Best Bakery in America by Baking Buyer Magazine in 2011. Check out their website for deliciously good treats you’ll want to gobble up.

The Hive Cake Studio is another delicious bakery you’ll want to check out. The Hive makes their cakes, cupcakes, and cookies by using the freshest ingredients from scratch. While you’re in the downtown area there are lots of places to shop from jewelry, vintage products, home decor, gifts, party supplies, and candles.
